JOHN MARSHALL - AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENT SIGNED 09/30/1786. JOHN MARSHALL John Marshall signs an autograph document. Autograph Document Signed: "John Marshall" in text as Attorney for the Plaintiff, 1p, 7¼x12. Richmond, Virginia, 1786 September 30. In full: "John Marshall attorney for the said plaintiff assigns for breaches &c that Mary the wife of the said William Page the defendant did attain her age of twenty one years in the life time of the said Mann to wit on the [left blank] day of [left blank] in the year 1757 but the said Mann did not in his life time make a title in fee simple in the said land to the said plaintiff nor hath a title to said land yet been made to the said Plaintiff according to the form [illegible] effect of the condition of the said writing obligatory & that the said Plf is ready to verify. Wherefor he Assays judgement". Legal document written by the 31-year-old future Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Parfeet versus Page. John Marshall served as Congressman from Virginia from March 4, 1799 to June 7, 1800, when he resigned to become John Adams' Secretary of State. Adams appointed Marshall as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on January 31, 1801. Marshall, who remained Secretary of State until Jefferson's inauguration on March 4, 1801, then served as Chief Justice until his death in 1835. Docketed on verso (unknown hand).
